The Idea

A phone call with an editor
Polaroids of Sarah Potempa

Beauty editors often asked Sarah how everyday women could recreate the waves she created on celebrities.

On one of those calls she explained the technique: hold the curling iron upside down, then wrap the hair backwards and away from the face. The editor laughed and said it sounded so complicated.

“It sounds so complicated, upside down and backwards!”

She wished there were an easier way, and she sketched one right then: a curling iron you hold upright that turns the hair for you.

The Invention

Sarah shared the sketch with her sister Erin, who left her job as a corporate lawyer to bring it to life.

Erin spent the next two years on research and development. The result was the patented Beachwaver®, a rotating iron that curls both sides away from the face at the touch of a button.

  • Hold it upright, the way a stylist would.
  • A small clamp at the bottom holds the ends of the hair.
  • A “go” button controls the rotation, for a beach wave in minutes.

The patent

“You didn’t invent that.”
She did.

When a commenter doubted her, Sarah answered the way only an inventor can: with the patent certificate from the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office.

The Beachwaver® is patented, and she still answers the doubters herself, one comment at a time.

“If it changes one person’s life, it’s all worth it.”Sarah Potempa

The Company

Beachwaver Co.
Sarah Potempa, founder and CEO of Beachwaver Co.

Beachwaver Co. began as a team of two. The sisters drove the truck to deliver product, stored inventory in their apartments and pitched every buyer themselves.

Their sister Emily joined soon after. They still create their own content and demo every day. Beachwaver was one of the first beauty brands to break through with live selling on TikTok Shop, where it has sold more than a million products.

In 2019 the brand launched haircare with clean ingredients and sustainable packaging, followed by the B.Bungalow fragrance collection. Today Beachwaver Co. has won 75 beauty awards and remains women-owned, self-funded and female-run.
